  • LANCASHIRE player Matthew Baldwin, 19, gave his confidence a timely boost ahead of this week's German Amateur Championship when he won the Birkdale Goblet over his home course.

The England international, who will join up with Lawrence Dodd and Ian Parnaby to represent their country at Seddiner See, near Berlin, carded rounds of 70 and 72, four-under-par in total, to beat his clubmate and county team-mate Matthew Cox by a shot.

Baldwin birdied the last hole in the first round to share the lead with Woolton's Mark Ellison, who then fell away with a 76.

Victory lifted him into contention in the Mitsushiba Order of Merit but there was no change at the top with Hart Common's Ken Hudson holding on to his 20 point lead over Ashton-on-Mersey's Kevin Kean.
  • SWINTON Park's Ross Wilson won the Junior League fixture at Davyhulme with 75 as North Manchester 19 handicapper Andy Lowes carded the best nett with 64.

The host's Chris Hayes won the first division prize with 65, matched by Lowes' clubmate John Harland in the second flight.

And Wilson combined with clubmate Paddy Faulds to finish second in the North West Manchester fourball over their home course, a point adrift of Prestwich's Gary Taylor and Denis Hazelwood, who clocked up 47.
