- DEFENDING Northern Counties League champions, Cheshire, kept the pressure on fellow leaders Yorkshire with a five-point victory over Cumbria at Seascale.
The fate of the title could hinge on the outcome of the clash between the big two at Doncaster next month with only Lancashire left with an outside chance of denying them.
But Cheshire skipper Ray Hughes, missing several key players who were trying to qualify for the Open, described the win as "flattering" as Cumbria took an early stranglehold.
"We could have lost the foursomes but pulled back to take them by two points and there were one or two close encounters in the singles," he said.
Meanwhile, Oldham veteran Alan Squires, drafted into the Lancashire side against Northumberland at West Lancs on the strength of his impressive form over the past month, turned on another stunning performance when he overpowered Ken Kris Wylam, 35 years his junior, five and four.
Lancashire had trailed by two points from the foursomes, but quickly made up lost ground early in the singles, Denton's Bob Bardsley eclipsing Paul Fiddes on the final green. - DAVID Horsey continued his hot streak when he won the Bromborough Bowl by three shots from his Cheshire teammate Adam Stott, from Reddish Vale.
The newly-crowned Cheshire champion will warm up for the Czech Amateur by competing in next week's South of England Championship at Walton Heath. - JON Hurst emulated his Shaw Hill clubmate Nick Dougherty when he won the Faldo Junior Series at Royal St David's with a three-under-par 66.
- WELSH wizard Simon Edwards smashed the course record with an eight-under-par 62 in the PGA North Region pro-am at Wilpshire.
