Speedway: Aces called up

JOE SCREEN, Belle Vue's British speedway champion, and rising star Simon Stead have been named in the Great Britain squad for the World Cup which begins at Swindon on July 31.

Screen played a key role in Britain reaching last year's final at Poole before controversially withdrawing because he felt the track didn't suit him.

Stead, 23, has made a big impression in his first season in the Elite League.

The squad includes Scott Nicholls (Coventry), Mark Loram (Arena Essex) and Gary Havelock (Peterborough).

Screeny has been a great rider in his time but his best days are now behind him. He should have got closer to becoming world champion though. Stead isn't ready just yet but has a good deal of potential. Is it just me but when I see Richardson and Nicholls as our best riders, I really do despair for Britain's chances
