Speedway: Ivan joins the stars

SPEEDWAY legend Ivan Mauger has agreed to join a full reunion of Belle Vue's four surviving world champions to make the start of the season on March 7.

Mauger, who won the title a record six times, will join Sweden's Ove Fundin, Peter Collins and Jason Crump at the memorial meeting for double champion Peter Craven, who died in 1963.

It will be the first time the four Belle Vue heroes have been together as world champions.

Mauger, currently in his native New Zealand, has confirmed that he will be a guest at the Kirkmanshulme Lane track.

Ian Thomas, part of Belle Vue's new promotion team, said: "We've got the full house now we know that Ivan will be coming. It will make it a very special night for Belle Vue in particular and speedway in general."

I was browsing the net as I am a Man United supporter, when I came across the article. I remember seeing Ivan race at Sydney Australia Showground between 1963 and 1967 from memory. He was the greatest. I watched him race against Greg Kentwell and Ray Kent (who had a tragic accident) and of course the great Jim Airy.
