RONNIE `The Rocket' Correy can add the missing ingredient that can power a major Belle Vue challenge for speedway's prestige Knockout Cup.

The veteran American, back in action after a four-year retirement, inspired a runaway victory over a sorry Swindon side at Kirkmanshulme Lane last night.

Correy, a not-so-secret weapon at the tailend of the Aces' team, ripped to 12 points - which included a stunning victory from the back over Grand Prix star Leigh Adams in heat 11.

The Aces, still with an outside chance of making the Elite League play-offs after last night's win, have to complete a first-round KO Cup win over Coventry before tackling Swindon for a place in the semi-final.

Promoter John Perrin, desperate to end a rain-ravaged season with some silverware, said: "Ronnie has made a marvellous return because it isn't easy to compete at this level after such a long absence.

"His average means he can ride at reserve, so he will be a massive asset in our bid to win the Cup.

"He is just what we have needed to put a sting in our tail and the other boys are also riding well."

The easy win over Swindon was clouded by complaints from the visitors, who were unhappy over the state of the track.

Yorkshire referee Peter Clark made an inspection and racing continued after grading work on a bend, but Perrin rejected claims it was unsafe.

He said: "The track was flooded yesterday morning after overnight rain, and we had to pump away 7,000 gallons of water before we could start work on it.

"Swindon decided they didn't like it but the track got better as the meeting went on."

The Aces will be without Kenneth Bjerre for tonight's match at Peterborough. They are back at Kirkmanshulme Lane tomorrow night.
