Golf: Ryder stars to limber up

TEN of the European side which will defend the Ryder Cup in Detroit next week complete their countdown by appearing in the Linde German Masters starting in Cologne tomorrow.

Captain Bernhard Langer and assistants Anders Forsbrand, Joakim Haeggman and Thomas Bjorn are also competing for the '340,000 first prize - as is Todd Hamilton, the Open champion, who American captain Hal Sutton felt able to leave out of his line-up for Oakland Hills.

The only two Europe players missing are Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia - third to him in Switzerland last weekend - and they will link up with the rest of the side on Monday.

Last year's event began with Swede Fredrik Jacobson equalling the European Tour record with his 12-under-par 60.
