MATTHEW Baldwin broke the course record at Fairhaven in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit Silver Pheasant with a stunning 13-under-par 61.

The 18-year-old England Boys' captain from Hesketh, invited to play in the M.E.N. Manchester Open at Mottram Hall next month, put on an awesome display of stroke-making, rattling up seven birdies in an outward half of 29 and adding six more on the home stretch.

He clipped three shots off the previous mark set in the same event last year by his former Lancashire team-mate Mark Ramsdale, who beat by one the record established in 1966 by the host club's Geoff Birtwel1.

Formby-attached Ramsdale, who has since turned professional, also recorded a merit best 17-under-par two round total which Baldwin fell two shots short of.

His first round 72 gave no hint of what was to come in the next on a course playing longer than usual for the time of the year because of heavy overnight rain but with highly receptive greens.

Baldwin, the Lancashire Amateur champion, won by six from Chris Geraghty, of St Annes Old Links, who posted 71 and 68.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Atkins won the Bosden Trophy at Hazel Grove thanks to a rousing finish to his second round.

The Reddish Vale one handicapper birdied three of the last four holes for a five-under-par 66 which he added to his opening 71 to earn him a one shot victory of Bramhall stalwart Gareth Bradley.

Pleasington's Michael Hunt still has a 200-point lead in the order of merit.
