Golf: Dyson lets lead slide away

SIMON Dyson snatched defeat from the jaws of victory when he blew a six-shot lead going into the final round of the BMW Asian Open in Shanghai.

The 26-year-old from Macclesfield lost his way with a 76 and was overtaken by Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Jimenez closed with 67 for a 14-under-par total which left long-time leader Dyson three shots adrift in second place.

It was the biggest final-round collapse of the year but at least Yorkshire-born Dyson, who has won three times in Asia, has wedged his foot back in the Tour door after losing his card last autumn.

His performance earned him '93,000 and a place in this week's Deutsche Bank Open. But whatever happens between times he will peg up in the JJB North West Challenge at Marriott Worsley Park at the end of July which is promoted by his ISM boss Andrew Chandler.

Royal Lytham's Paul Eales finished 10 shots off the place in 16th spot and Mobberley's Jon Cheetham, tied 37th.

Matthew Richardson won a head-to-head battle with his England international colleague Sam Osborne to win the Brabazon Trophy at a sun drenched West Lancs.

The 19-year-old from Middlesex carded a closing 67 the best round of the day, for 279, nine-under-par, one ahead of Osborne.

Andy Runciman, who won the Bolton Championship three years ago, added the President's Trophy to his impressive list of honours with rounds of 69 and 66 at Old Links.

The Deane two handicapper, often on the fringe of a county call-up, had three shots to spare over Breightmet's Steve Hare, who pipped Hindley Hall's Lee Davies on countback.

The host club's Steve Bryan scored the top gross, a two-round total of 140.

Zak Leonard and John Alty beat their Lowes Park clubmates on a 43-point countback to win the Bury GA Charity tournament at Lowes Park.

The event raised '700 for Bury and Bolton hospices.
