ROUND-UP of the region's non-league football action.
Hyde boss Steve Waywell has dismissed talk that the Tigers' UniBond first division title triumph will be forgotten if they lose their Northern Alliance play-off quarter-final at
Ashton tomorrow.
Waywell's men sealed the champion-ship with a 4-0 rout of
North Ferriby to earn a trip to Hurst Cross to face an Ashton side who blew their last chance of automatic promotion in crashing 4-3 to Harrogate.
Waywell, whose side have lost to Ashton in both the FA Cup and Manchester Premier Cup this season, is adamant a third defeat by Gerry Quinn's team would not take the shine off their achievement.
He said: "No matter what happens to us in the play-offs, nothing can take away the fact we've won the double. Promotion would just be the icing on the cake."
Ashton's last-day loss condemned them to finishing 14th in the UniBond premier, immediately below the Alliance cut-off line, and enabled a relieved
Altrincham to follow
Droylsden and
Stalybridge in winning promotion to the Nationwide Conference's new northern feeder division.
Alty would have gone straight up in any case as they beat
Runcorn 1-0 to finish 12th thanks to a Barry Shuttleworth goal after just 50 seconds.
Radcliffe squeezed into the play-offs despite a 2-1 home defeat by Burscough and now face a trip to Whitby tomorrow. Runners-up
Droylsden signed off with two Dave Cameron goals giving them a 2-1 comeback win at Whitby.
Mossley drew 2-2 with
Ramsbottom to top the NW Counties League, but
Clitheroe need a point for the title.
