BELLE Vue starlet Steve Boxall will also race for Premier League Newcastle next year.

Canterbury-based Boxall, aiming to make up for lost time after missing most of last season through injury, has taken advantage of the change in rule which allows young riders to double up between the Elite and Premier Leagues.

Newcastle will have first claim on his services but, as they race their home matches on a Sunday, the move will have only a marginal effect on his availability for the One51 Aces.

The 21-year-old, who is on loan from Rye House, had been linked with Somerset but his transfer to Newcastle means the Aces can now sign a doubling up rider as cover for him.

Proceed

Team boss Chris Morton can proceed now he knows what day Boxall will be committed to riding home fixtures in the Premier League.

He said: "We are exploring a number of options now we know the situation with Steve. I think it will be a week before it is finalised."

Boxall's decision to join Newcastle will make him a long distance commuter from Kent to the north east and Manchester for his home meetings.

Belle Vue's four Scandinavian riders will be able to fly in for meetings in less time than it will take Boxall to drive up. But, with Newcastle being a Sunday track, he will have the option of staying over and coming down to race at Belle Vue on a Monday.

Boxall, who is regaining fitness on his moto-cross bike after suffering a serious arm injury last March, said: "I want all the racing I can get after missing almost all of last season."

Newcastle promoter Darryl Illingworth is thrilled to have signed one of Britain's top young talents, saying: "We've been looking to bring him to Newcastle for quite some time. We are aware that at least four other PremierLeague clubs were after him."
