Ramm’s medal raid

SHINES ON THE ALGARVE: Urmston Judo Club member Josh Ramm is pictured with his silver medal [s]

WHILE most people return from the Algarve with little more than a sun-tan, Urmston Judo Club member Josh Ramm really made his trip count, coming home with a silver medal.

The 16-year-old enjoyed success in the National Portuguese Championships, after being invited to compete for Algarve Judo Club.

Ramm is one of the top judo prospects in the country being one of the high fliers in his age group and weight category in the UK.

In a bid to keep fit and trim while on holiday in Portugal, a couple of months ago, Ramm went training at the Algarve club.

He made a good impression, beating most of the local fighters during his time there.

After returning to Britain Ramm received an email inviting him to be one of six competitors to represent the club at the national judo championships in Lisbon.

The Algarve club had never won a medal at the competition before but, inspired by some great judo by Ramm, including a victory against a player weighing 120kg, they battled through to the national final and claimed the silver medal.

Ramm, who is coached by Chorlton ace Steve Pullen OBE and sponsored by lovemarmalade.com, has also been busy back in England.

He won two out of three fights to win his line-up and then went on to beat three opponents in record time, all under a minute, to earn the coveted black belt.

Pullen said: "Josh is a terrific role model for all of the young judo players at the club which meets at the George Carnall Centre."

Urmston Judo Club are looking for new talent in the Olympic sport.

Anyone, of any age, wishing to find out more can contact Pullen on 0161 881 3033.
