Hopley’s Cup triumph

TROPHY DELIGHT: Hancock Cup winners James Hopley and Jane Dawson with sponsor Louise Gaston-Grubb (s)

MANCHESTER Alliance Captain James Hopley made it back-to-back wins in the Alliance Wednesday fixtures in the battle for the Hancock Trophy at Sale.

With the format revised to give a shotgun start there was a much bigger entry for the Mixed Foursomes Stableford, sponsored by Louise Gaston-Grubb of Kaddyfix.

Hopley, the Hazel Grove professional, found a great partner in Jane Dawson as they racked up 37 points to win the pro-am section to secure the Hancock Cup, to take back to their club for the first time in its history.

Next in were Knutsford duo Tom Maxwell and Gill Mellor with 35 points. Bury duo Sean Doherty and Annette Gale were third with 32 points.

In the am-am section the winners were staunch Alliance supporter Peter Myers and his Bramhall partner Lindsey Webster, who posted 35 points.

They led in from Sale’s Mobi and Cath Rawthore (33) and Vin and Jean Doyle from Blackley (31).

Also taking part were Lancashire champion Kelly Tidy (Manchester), who recently played in the junior Ryder Cup in America, and Cheshire’s young stars Natalie Lowe (Prestbury) and Gemma Clews (Ashton-on-Mersey).

Davyhulme Park’s men played for the Woodlands Trophy in a pairs competition and finishing top, with 34 points, were Bernard Garrity and Joe Kinsella.

All proceeds from the competition go towards adding or renewing the wooded areas of the course.

Park’s ladies played a 14-hole Stableford in two divisions and in the top division Lady Captain Betty Potts led from the front with 24 points. In the other division Sue Keefe won with 29 points.

Two top local Cheshire golfers have joined forces to offer a unique MOT that will help golf addicts pinpoint their weaknesses and provide practical advice for long-term improvement.

Golf professional Daniel Haughian and specialist sports physiotherapist Sue Fraser-Thomson have combined their talents to come up with a personalised assessment which they believe will play dividends for aspiring golfers.

Haughian said: "Since I have been coaching golf I have recognised that there are frequently times when you tell someone what they should be doing to improve their swing, but they can’t do it for physiological reasons.

"I knew that Sue provided golf screening programmes from a physiotherapy perspective so we decided that if we could bring both analyses together at a ‘one stop shop’ we could really help golfers improve."

The hour long MOT, which takes place at the Adlington Golf Centre, near Poynton, has three components: a golf swing analysis, a physiotherapy assessment and a fitness and flexibility check up.

The Golf MOT is suitable for novices and experienced club golfers as well as golf professionals of all ages.
