VICKY Botwright has added her voice to the growing clamour for squash to become an Olympic sport.

The former world number five from Worsley made a winning start to the Hi-Tec World Championships at Sportcity on Tuesday night.

And despite now facing reigning champion Rachael Grinham for a quarter-final place, Botwright is determined to make the most of her final appearance in an individual event.

She will also lobby two members of the International Olympic Committee, visiting the tournament to assess the possibility of bringing squash into the Olympic family for the 2016 Games.

A decision will be made in 12 months time when the host venue is confirmed.

"Other racket sports such as tennis and badminton are Olympic sports," said Botwright after crushing Italy's Manuela Manetta 11-5, 11-7, 11-2 in just 21 minutes.

"So, too is table tennis. So, why not squash? The IOC delegates only have to see what a brilliant job Manchester has done with this tournament.

"And it will be even more spectacular towards the end of the week for the semi-finals and final.

"Most players I have spoken to would rather win an Olympic gold medal than become world champion.

"For us, the Olympics would be the pinnacle of our sport. But that's certainly not the case for some of the sports, including tennis."

Despite facing second seed Grinham, Botwright is relishing the occasion.

"It might seem strange to say I'm looking forward to playing the world champion. But I always enjoy playing against her.

"And the last time we met in Hong Kong last year, I won."

Grinham won her opening match against Kiwi Louise Crome.

Boy wonder Mohammed El Shorbagy caused the first upset with a five sets victory over France's number six seed, Thierry Lincou.
