Pendleton claims second gold

VICTORY: Victoria Pendleton
VICTORIA Pendleton claimed her second title of the National Track Championships in Manchester.

The Olympic gold medallist teamed up with Leeds girl Anna Blyth to win the team sprint final.

But only a crash could have prevented the duo standing on top of the podium.

Manchester-based Blyth began the week with victory in the 500 metres time trial. A day later Pendleton (pictured) defeated Blyth to win the individual sprint.

Last night they powered to victory in 35.178 seconds over Jess Varnish and Helen Scott.

"It was awesome riding with Victoria," said Blyth. "Normally we are racing against each other so it's great to do something together."

Pendleton (pictured) withdrew from the Scratch race on Thursday night and admitted: "It was better doing an event I know.

"My back was hurting earlier in the week but it is feeling fine now.

"But it's been so long since I've been on the track it takes some getting used to."

Didsbury star Matt Crampton, a winner of the kilo and sprint, made it title number three, joining Daniel Lyte to win the Team Sprint.

Welsh prospect Alexandra Greenfield won the longest race on the women's track programme-the 160-lap Points race.

Greenfield amassed 63 points, 24 points clear of silver medallist Katie Colclough. Ella Sadler-Andrews took the bronze.

The biggest crowd of the week is expected tonight for the final night with Pendleton going for a third gold in the keirin.
