EUROPEAN medallist Becky Lyne races competitively for the first time this season as Manchester welcomes the country's best middle- distance stars to Sportcity tonight.

Lyne starts her bid for the Olympic Games in the British Milers Club meeting at the Regional Athletics Arena.

And after an injury-plagued 2007, the Stockport-based star hopes for a flying start.

However, after an eight-month lay-off Lyne, an 800 metres bronze medallist in Gothenburg two years ago, won't be breaking records as she has opted to make her comeback over 1500 metres while big British rival Jenny Meadows competes over two laps.

Class

Meadows replaced Lyne in the British team for the 2007 world championships in Osaka and then showed her class by reaching the world indoor final in Valencia back in March.

She recently obtained an Olympic B qualification with a time of 2mins 0.64secs in Hengelo.

A total of 360 senior athletes are competing in this annual event, including a number of overseas stars.

Latvia's Dmitrijs Jurkevics has flown in for the 800 metres while Australian Mitch Kealey goes in the 1500 metres where Stockport junior Ross Millington has a chance to show his ability.

The major omissions from a packed programme are British 800 metres No 1 Michael Rimmer, who competes in Berlin on Sunday, and Tom Lancashire of Bolton United Harriers, who has travelled to Zaragoza.

Norman Poole, the meeting organiser and Wythenshawe-based Rimmer's coach, said: "It's a shame they're not racing tonight but the best of the rest are all competing.

"We've got a local schools meeting from 4.30pm with the BMC races starting at 5.30pm."
