Council boost for Bury

CRISIS club Bury play their final home game of the season today (Saturday), boosted by the news of a £50,000 cash injection.

Bury Council leaders have come under fire from supporters in recent months regarding the lack of financial backing for the club

However, council chief John Byrne has now announced a £50,000 one-year sponsorship deal after long-time backers, Birthdays, decided to pull out.

Assuming the club survives until next season, they are due back in the High Court on April 26 to seek a further period of administration, then the local authority will have its name and logo on front of the Shakers kit.

Birthdays' three-year sponsorship deal ends at the close of the current season.

Members of all political parties have sanctioned the deal though money will not be paid until the club's survival plans are in place.

Optimism

Byrne, a Gigg Lane regular, said: "The cash underlines our optimism that the club has a future and a bright one at that.

"Sadly, the local authority has not been in a position to come up with the kind of funding needed to clear the club's huge debts.Bury FC, though, have been ambassadors of our town for so long and to see it disappear would be a real tragedy. The shirt sponsorship provides much-needed money for them."

Bury co -chairman Fred Mason revealed the deal had been rushed through in a week after Birthdays announced they were pulling out of their sponsorship.

"We had to move quickly but hopefully we can persuade them to extend the period we are allowed," he said.

"And it gives the council an opportunity to be doing something for the club."

However, in order to go forward Mason has revealed the club must be out of administration by the end of May.
