Aces off to a flyer

BELLE Vue race into tonight's opening home speedway fixture of the season with the massive confidence boost of a challenge match victory at Oxford.

The Aces, sponsored by Channel M, pulled off a shock 51-42 win to leave the riders on a high for individual action in the Peter Craven Memorial Trophy meeting at Kirkmanshulme Lane tonight (7. 30).

Stockport youngster James Wright kept his promise to move up a level by winning three races on his way to a top score of 10.

Tonight he will face Grand Prix stars Scott Nicholls, the British champion, Andreas Jonsson, of Sweden, and rising British star Chris Harris who was handed a GP wild card in preference to Aces' No 1, Simon Stead.

Promoter Chris Morton said: "I was not totally surprised that we did well at Oxford because I thought we had a chance. What was a surprise was that we won so convincingly. It was very pleasing that everyone performed. It suggested we have strength in depth and it was a real team effort."

What is your prediction for tonight's match? Have your say.

Think we're going to see a big crowd tonight.
Everyone else was writing us off, the Oxford fans were expecting a big home win on Friday but we turned them over easily.

There's a buzz about Belle Vue.
Scott Nicholls and Andreas Jonsson will fancy their chances of lifting the trophy tonight, but I wouldn't bet against a home winner.

Simon Stead should be up there, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Joe Screen take it. I can also see Kaj Laukkanen and James Wright challenging for a rostrum place.
