JONNY Wilkinson looks certain to miss England's RBS 6 Nations Championship opener against Italy on February 15.
The World Cup match winner is battling to overcome a shoulder problem, and England head coach Sir Clive Woodward today said that he is "99% convinced" that Wilkinson will not make the game.
Woodward has not completely ruled the Newcastle fly-half out of his plans, but an appearance in Rome is highly unlikely.
"I am assuming that he won't be fit for the Italy game," Woodward said.
"I met with him on Saturday, and I am 99% convinced in terms of our preparation that he won't be fit.
"Again we go game by game, and obviously, we want him back as soon as possible, but we assume that he won't be fit for Italy."
Wilkinson has joined up with England's 43-man squad for a two-day training camp in Surrey, but will not take part in tonight's workout at Twickenham and will be reassessed by England's medical staff tomorrow.
With Wilkinson effectively out of the equation for England's first Test since they were crowned world champions, experienced Northampton performer Paul Grayson looks the favourite to start at number 10 in Rome.
Woodward though, will also look at candidates like Alex King, Mike Catt and Olly Barkley, although his team selection is unlikely to take place until the middle of next week.
