IT'S been a baptism of fire for summer signing Lee Thomas. But the former Cardiff Blue is enjoying his chance to make a name for himself at Edgeley Park.

Thomas, 22, was snapped up along with former Cardiff team-mate Ben Evans and was struggling to get a game at Sale before they were dealt a string of injury blows, stripping them of almost a full team.

The Welshman, who has represented his country at all levels up to under-21, was signed to provide kicking cover for Charlie Hodgson after the departure of Valentin Courrent. And while he can play at stand-off, he is equally at home at centre where he has been working wonders for his new side.

And on the evidence of recent games, it is going to take something special to oust him from the side.

He was instrumental in setting up Magnus Lund's late try against Harlequins three weeks ago and then he kicked Sharks to victory against Scarlets, helping Sale to reach the semi-final of the EDF Energy Cup.

His kicking has certainly impressed Sale fans, but what would you expect from a youngster who spend two years under the watchful eye of former Wales stand-off and prolific goal kicker Neil Jenkins?

Having found his feet in the Sale side, Thomas was then selected for last Sunday's clash against Stade Francais in Paris, and again performed well.

He said: "When I came here I was aware how hard it would be to get into such a successful side and knew I would have to be patient.

"Injuries crop up throughout the season at all clubs and at all levels, but things have been particularly bad at Sale this season. But when injuries occur, it is up to the players who come in to do their best and make it difficult for the coaches to leave them out when players are fit again.

"I consider myself very fortunate to have been coached in Wales by Neil Jenkins.

"We spent a lot of time together working on my kicking, and you can't really ask for a better coach in that department."

Sale coach Kingsley Jones spoke highly of Thomas when he signed, and has been impressed by what he has seen so far in his time at Sale.

Jones said: "We hoped that during this period of adversity players would step up to the mark and Lee has done just that."

Meanwhile, France winger Christophe Dominici could have played his last game this year after injuring his right knee in Stade Francais' Heineken Cup win over Sale at the weekend, scoring two first half tries.
