SHARKS prop forward Martin Halsall loves a challenge.

Which is just as well, because in order to play first-team rugby this season he has got to outperform two of the most consistent front row players in rugby union's top flight.

The 21-year-old tight head from Blackpool wants to play a part in defending Sale's Premiership title, but first he must push his way past seasoned campaigners Stuart Turner and Barry Stewart.

He said: "I have been at Sale for three years now, and it's time for me to step up a level. But there is some serious competition for the position with Barry and Stuart playing so well.

"But at least I have two very experienced players to learn from and that can only be a good thing."

Halsall has served his time in the Academy ranks and also spent a successful season on loan with Yorkshire side Wharfdale, but last season he was hit by injury.

He damaged ligaments just before the season got under way and then repeated the injury towards the end of the season when his services would have been appreciated as Sale struggled with injuries.

To get him back to full fitness, Sale shipped Halsall out to New Zealand for six weeks over the summer where he played for Pukekohe.

"I have just spent the summer playing rugby in New Zealand and will report back on July 10 for the pre-season, and am really looking forward to it," he added.

Do you think Halsall will make the step up? Have your say.
