THE champions of England will take on the best team in France when Sale Sharks cross the Channel as part of their pre-season warm-up.

Sale will play Perpignan, Beziers and Biarritz, who knocked Sharks out of the Heineken Cup in the quarter-finals, before returning home to face Edinburgh Gunners at Edgeley Park on August 25.

That fixture comes just a week before they kick-off the season against the team they beat to win the English title, Leicester Tigers.

On August 4 they will take on Perpignan followed by a game against Beziers on August 10.

Two days later they will take on the mighty Biarritz to celebrate the opening of a new stand at the Aguilera Stadium.

Sharks head coach, Kingsley Jones, is looking forward to the challenge of taking on the French champions.

He said: "To be able to stage a game between the champions of France and the champions of England is something very special.

Biarritz

"A full house is expected at the new stadium and, with Biarritz starting their campaign the following weekend, we can expect a very competitive match indeed.

"From a Sale Sharks perspective, we want to win the game, and to put down a marker for our European ambitions this season.

"However, for many of our top players this will be their first competitive game since the Championship final so it will be very tough for us.

"The experience of going to a place like Biarritz can only be of benefit to the players. These are the sort of places we will have to come to and win if we are to achieve our ambition of lifting the Heineken Cup."
