Rugby Union

Jason: Let's sing to the same tune

SHARKS skipper Jason Robinson wants the whole region to unite behind his side in their bid to make history.

Sharks face Leicester Tigers in the Premiership final at Twickenham on May 27 and Robinson sees their feat as a victory for rugby union in the North West.

"The players are one victory away from being crowned champions of England," he said.

"Having already finished top of the league during the regular season, we do not intend to let the second-placed team come through at the end to snatch the trophy.

"The great thing about rugby union in our area is that there is only Premiership one team in the whole of the North West. Sale Sharks fans come from all over Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cumbria.

"Unlike the big football cup finals, there are no divided loyalties among the people of the North West - they can all support Sale Sharks.

"I would urge every sports fan who is proud to be from the North West to support Sale Sharks. It is our chance to become champions of England.

Sporting capital

"Our teams in all sorts of sports have consistently led the rest of the country, and we proved in 2002 with the Commonwealth Games that this area is the sporting capital of the country.

"Now it is rugby union's turn!

"Let's take an army down to London to show everyone where the home of true sporting champions lies."

And Sharks have turned up the volume ahead of their big Twickenham date. The club are to record their new anthem `Do You Hear the People Sing?' which was given its first performance by Sale tenor Martin Toal before the semi-final victory over Wasps last Sunday.

The song, taken from the musical Les Miserables, proved a big hit and now the club would like supporters to help produce an official recording, which will then be played on the dozens of coaches making the journey down to Twickenham.

It will also be played at the final itself.

Supporters are invited to Edgeley Park for 1pm tomorrow, with the recording session scheduled for 1.30pm in the Robinsons Stand.

Sharks chief executive Niels de Vos said: "Sale Sharks are leading a rugby revolution here in the North West.

"We are the coming force of English rugby, taking on and beating the old establishment clubs.

"To have this song, sung by thousands of the club's supporters, played as the team run out at Twickenham will be a truly unique experience."

When will people realise that most rugby supporters in the NW don';t care about Sale - rugby is Wigan, Warrington, Salford, ST.Helens, Oldham etc etc/ the sooner MEN recognises this, the better.

Sale is not NW rugby - ever heard of Wigan, Warrington, St.helens to name a few. Sale is a small RU club doing well at the moment, it receives disproportionate publicity. I certainly won't be cheering on this hyped up club.

Another completely ridiculous effort from the MEN with regards to "Rugby"!!

Sale do not represent "North West Rugby", there are many other clubs with more tradition, history, success and support in the North West that can truly lay claim to represent the region.

What of St Helens, Warrington, Wigan, all of whom boast more of all of the the above.

This MEN preoccupation with Rugby Union is becoming a joke. The dominant rugby force in the NW is League. Always has been, and always will be.

MEN should reflect this "Fact" in it's coverage.

How about it??
