Robinson poised to make history

SALE Sharks superstar Jason Robinson is on course to make sporting history.

The man dubbed Billy Whizz can rewrite the record books by becoming the first player to win rugby league and rugby union Grand Finals.

In 1998, Robinson lit up Old Trafford with a man-of-the-match display as Wigan Warriors won the first Super League grand final.

He turned on the power to score a crucial first-half try as Wigan beat team Leeds 10-4.

The Leeds-born wing wizard's former Wigan team-mate Henry Paul played for Gloucester in the 2003 rugby union grand final but lost out to Wasps.

Robinson is now looking to go one better than Paul by helping Sale beat Leicester in the Guinness Premiership final at Twickenham on May 27.

Tribute

He has already played his part in getting them there, scoring the only try of the match as Sale beat Wasps 22-12 in Sunday's semi-final. Former Wigan and GB coach Maurice Bamford has paid tribute to his fellow Yorkshireman.

Bamford said: "Robinson is still a wonderful, world-class player. I saw his try against Wasps and it was sensational. It was the kind of try that can only be scored by an international star.

"You have to give total credit to Jason for the way he has adapted to union and the impact he has had on the game.

"Rugby union doesn't very often see the kind of rugby league magic that players like Jason can provide.

"He can still spot a gap, go through it and turn on the power. He is an exceptional talent, still a match-winner and I'd go so far to say he's even lost his Yorkshire accent - he now speaks like a southerner, a proper RU man!

"But nothing can be taken away from the lad and you'd always want him in your side."

Do you think Sale will win the title? Have your say.
