ENGLAND'S 11-week rule confines Charlie Hodgson to the bench as Sale Sharks face Leicester Tigers in their Zurich Premiership opener at Edgeley Park tomorrow (1.30).

Because he played in England's last Test in Australia during the summer Hodgson, along with the rest of that side, is limited to just 40 minutes of rugby this weekend.

The scheme has been introduced by England to give their players more recovery time, although Hodgson has played in pre-season friendlies.

"It is a situation that is out of our hands but we are fortunate that we have a very able deputy in Mike Hercus," said Sale's director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre.

"Players will interchange anyway this season because I don't want them sitting on the bench getting ring rusty. I will even change a winning side to give players time on the field.

"There will be even more competition for places when we visit London Wasps next week because Pete Anglesea should be available again and I will have too many players for available positions. That is, of course, if we avoid injuries."

The back division against Tigers is pretty much as expected, with Bryan Redpath partnering Hercus, America's World Cup fly-half .

Up front, Trevor Woodman makes his Premiership debu for Sale and tough French hooker Sebastien Bruno starts ahead of Andy Titterrell, with Barry Stewart at tight-head and Andrew Sheridan on the bench.

Chris Jones, back from injury, also starts on the bench with Dean Schofield and the impressive Christian Day forming the second row to take on Martin Johnson and Ben Kay.

Schofield, who started his senior career with Tigers' under-21 side, will doubtless renew hostilities with Johnson, the pair having squared up to each other in the wildcard final in May.

Jason White and Sebastien Chabal provide the hammer in the back row while Magnus Lund has the job of beating Neil Back to the breakdown.

Saint-Andre said: "What we need tomorrow is a full stadium and the crowd right behind us."
