Scotland produced one of their best performances in recent memory to stun Ireland in a sensational last-ever Test at Croke Park and avoid the RBS 6 Nations wooden spoon.

Dan Parks won his third man-of-the-match award of the tournament with an outstanding display that included 18 points and the winning penalty in 79th minute in the 23-30 scoreline.

Johnnie Beattie also scored a rare try for the visitors, while Brian O’Driscoll touched down for Ireland, whose other points were kicked by Jonathan Sexton and Ronan O’Gara as they missed out on a fifth triple crown in seven years. Scotland's win means France win the tournament.

Wales boss Warren Gatland believes his side are stronger than the final RBS 6 Nations table will show after they secured fourth place with a 33-10 win over Italy.

James Hook scored two tries and Stephen Jones kicked 16 points as Wales eventually won easily.

But defeats to England, France and Ireland meant it was a consolation victory.

Now Wales will turn their attentions to the Tests against South Africa and New Zealand in June, and Gatland hopes today’s win can raise his players’ morale.

He told BBC1: “I thought it was a professional performance by us and we went out there and showed what potentially we are capable of.

“In other games we’ve let ourselves down and been behind and had to chase.”

Of the campaign, Gatland said: “(It has been) pretty frustrating really.

“We feel we haven’t performed to our potential.

“There were a couple of games we’ve let slip. We feel our position in the table doesn’t really reflect where we are."
