THE Jones boy is fit and raring to go for Sharks as they travel to Vicarage Road to face Saracens in the Zurich Premiership tomorrow.

But Saracens World Cup star Richard Hill will be interested to learn that it is not his new England back row colleague from Sale, Chris Jones, that he needs to worry about.

The rangy number eight, who often plays in the second row for Sharks, won't even be on the field tomorrow because he is resting a slight back strain.

In the starting line-up, however, will be Chris Rhys Jones, a powerhouse centre who got on as a replacement against Newcastle Falcons last week for what was his first appearance of a best-forgotten season.

Impact

The youngster, who has played at representative level for both England and Wales, had been sidelined for seven months with a broken wrist but his impact last week was immediate.

The adrenalin rush was such that he was lucky not to be sin-binned for his first tackle seconds after taking the field.

He admitted his introduction had been a bit frenetic but he got away with it and spent his time on field impressing everyone in the ground, not least the opposition.

The other Jones is the tough, direct runner the back line has been missing and, whilst another youngster, Chris Mayor, has impressed with his side-stepping bursts, this lad enjoys route one.

His physicality certainly seemed to disturb Newcastle's midfield defence last week and the grin on the face of coach Jim Mallinder told its own story. Here was someone taking the game to the opposition big style!

For that reason Mallinder was only too happy to give the 21-year-old what will be only his third senior appearance.

Ironically, he made his debut in the same fixture at the end of last season and it had been anticipated that he would be pushing for a regular spot this time.

But he broke his wrist in a friendly last August and, before last week's call-up as a replacement, had played just one game for the Jets.

"It has been very frustrating," he told me. "I had hoped to be back playing by the end of the year but the consultant said I needed another operation on it four months after the original surgery.

"It wasn't the best Christmas present I have ever received.

"After breaking into the senior side at the end of last season I had hoped to be really involved this time but I had to spent it kicking my heels.

"What made it worse was the fact that Dan Harris got injured the week after me and he was out for the season too."

His only other senior appearance last season was in the cross-code game against St Helens at Knowsley Road and that was an interesting experience, playing against his home town club.

His own development had been at West Park rugby union club, from the age of about seven, and his father and brother still play there.

With centres having gone down like ninepins at Sale this season, Jones will team up tomorrow with former Wigan Warrior Mayor and Mallinder hopes it will prove to be a balanced centre pairing.

Changes

Jones takes over from Vaughan Going, who reverts to the bench, with the only other changes from last week in the pack.

Alex Sanderson requires surgery on his back so has played his last game for the Sharks. His place in the back row is taken by Aussie Hugh Perrett.

Skipper Pete Anglesea is also joined by Jason White who moves back from the second row where Dean Schofield makes a return to senior action.

Sharks could finish fifth if they win tomorrow and at Leeds Tykes next weekend.
