NEW Sale Sharks skipper Juan-Martin Fernandez Lobbe is intent on forging a band of brothers at Edgeley Park this season.

Whilst director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre has been busy planning for Sunday's Guinness Premiership opener at Newcastle, the Argentine flank forward has been looking to build a special team spirit amongst the Sharks squad.

Lobbe believes the key to getting the very best out of, on paper, what is one of the game's most talented squads lies in establishing an unbreakable bond amongst players and backroom staff.

To that end, Lobbe - who was only officially appointed a fortnight ago - has organised a trip for the entire Sale squad to Manchester city centre tonight.

"For me the key is to try and build a good team spirit which can help make us go all the way," said the 26-year-old star of Argentina's march to last year's World Cup semi-finals.

"So we are all going into Manchester just to spend some time together, to go round and try to relax.

"It's important that we can have a laugh and enjoy each other's company and maybe disconnect from rugby just for a while.

"I believe that if the head is not working well then it's impossible for you to play well so it's very important to have a clear mind in order to be ready to play.

"I think that it's vital to develop a bond with your team-mates because it makes things easier when you are out there on the pitch.

"I'm happy with the way things have gone so far in our warm-up games and in training and I think we have an amazing squad.

"But I always say you don't win anything with big names alone.

"You simply need to perform on the pitch and that's what we have to concentrate on at Newcastle this weekend."

Already established as one of Sale's most popular players with supporters, it's that selfless attitude and power of positive thinking that were among the key factors behind Lobbe's appointment.

Lobbe actually shed tears in the wake of Sale's final day defeat to London Irish last term which cost them a place in the play-offs, a fact which was not lost on Saint-Andre.

And head coach Kingsley Jones said the qualities which define Lobbe as a player made his appointment a shoe-in

"We have a specific player profile that we look for when we recruit," revealed Jones.

"That is someone who plays for the team, who is selfless, who is always positive and who is desperate to be a winner.

"And really when we sat down and looked at those qualities, then Juan epitomized all those things.

"He's a very popular team member, which is very important as well, and he's respected by everybody at the club so I guess he was an easy choice.

"Jason White, who was our captain last year, did a good job but Jason's had a real tough two years what with serious injuries and then the demands of leading Scotland in the World Cup.

"So he needs to concentrate on getting back to being one of the best flankers in the world which he was two years ago.

"And that made the decision in regards to appointing Juan as skipper all the more easier for us."
