Foden was hurt during last weekend's International Rugby Board world series event in South Africa.
He will undergo surgery on his shoulder today and may now be sidelined until mid-March.
It's a huge blow for both player and club and has overshadowed the Sharks preparations for tomorrow night's European Challenge Cup clash with Bayonne at Edgeley Park.
Foden has emerged as one of Sale's key players so far this term, having nailed down a place at full-back despite having started his career as a scrum-half.
And gven his current spectacular form, the 22-year-old would have been an outside bet to make the England squad for this season's RBS 6 Nations Championship.
He said: "I am gutted with the diagnosis and will have an operation to correct the damage.
"I have enjoyed playing regularly this season and I believe we are on the verge of major success at the club.
"I will be starting my rehabilitation as soon as possible and hope to be back in action as soon as possible."

Ben foden is a great player and are most of the rest but one question is in my my head if he is a better player as a scrum half why arent they playing him as one. His contract runs out soon, will other clubs steal him away????
