Matt Parish to restore Salford Reds' pride

Salford CIty Reds new head coach Matt Parish
Matt Parish must now wait two weeks before making his home debut as Salford Reds’ seventh coach in the Super League era.

The Aussie admits the last eight days have been hectic since he arrived in England.

He has already made two long motorway treks to Hull, he’s seen the worst of the weather and has been living out of a suitcase from a Manchester hotel.

Salford Quays looks a likely home base for a man who has left family and friends back home to earn his spurs in England.

Parish is clearly very much his own man and he has had an early positive impact on his players.

He is a knowledgeable, astute student of the game – an honest “straight-shooter” according to skipper Daniel Holdsworth.

Football director Steve Simms has been instantly impressed labelling Parish a modern day coach with modern ideas.

A week into the job and Parish clearly realises he needs to change the culture of the club and greatly increase Salford’s on-field professionalism and match-day mentality.

It’s a big job and Parish may well be burdened early on by the lingering knock-on effect of previous coaching dynasties.

Training has been innovative and as one would expect it’s on a par with what happens in the NRL.

Parish will set high standards. He deserves early credit for a vastly improved display at Hull KR on Sunday.

After watching the team leak tries for fun across the city the previous week, he observed the horror show at first-hand and immediately set about remedying the situation.

A week on and it was clear better structures were in place, greater organisation existed and there was a clear understanding of the need to put preparation into practice on game day hence the encouraging performance.

In just eight days, Parish had taken sufficient steps towards putting pride back in pulling on a Salford shirt.

His early impact offers rich grounds for optimism.

His partnership with assistant coach Phil Veivers, a fellow Aussie should be a good one.

Together, they must devise a winning formula and instil greater self- belief into some players who lack the Aussie mentality of fighting to the finish.

To label them as quitters would be a slur and unfair, but to say many are often content with their somewhat limited efforts is not wide of the mark.

Parish has many rough edges to knock off and needs to strengthen and build a squad that will be on his wavelength.

He knows the game inside out, he has the contacts and he simply wants his new players to listen, learn, develop and perform to maximum ability. This has already been made clear but the size of the task is there for all to see.

It’s a 24/7 role for Parish and it won’t get any easier, but rugby league and coaching is clearly very much the new man’s vocation.

Fans who travelled to Hull KR saw the improvement at first hand. They also liked Parish’s snipe earlier in the week at arch- rivals Warrington for targeting Stefan Ratchford.

Danny Gray, a lifelong Salford supporter and founder member of the Forever Reds group believes Parish can bring success.

He says: “I am already massively impressed with Matt’s no-nonsense attitude.

“I have been watching Salford for 30 years and during this time only Karl Harrison has come in as coach and displayed a similar genuine passion to do well.

“Parish is obviously not trying to build Rome in a day, he is aware of the problems at Salford but he has a game plan and is determined.

“I am thoroughly confident he is the man who could take us on to the next level.

“I am sure many supporters share this view. Following Twitter, you can see players have responded and want to do well.

“Matt has already shown has bottle along with confidence in his own ability.

“It will take time though and we have to stick with him.”

What do you think? Have your say.

just shows how bad the decision to appoint the very poor coach McRae in the first place, something I suspect was pushed on Salford with regards a license in the first round last time. Just hope that the RL can now believe that Salford are now a serious club and make the new license award a formality.

Something I picked up on was when Dan Holdsworth was interviewed at Southport he said the training was as intense as it ever had been, and I can imagine this no nonsense coach really putting them through their paces. I think top eight is gone now sadly but this lad will see us right for next season. We have a new ground, a great new sponsor with funding and a new coach to take us to the next level. Exciting times at last for us long suffering salford fans.

Mr Parish PLEASE tell it how it is. We need honesty, endeavour and integrity. Salford are chronic underachievers and a club that has seemed to tolerate mediocrity for far too long.
