Simms so keen to raise the bar

SALFORD football director Steve Simms is calling for communication levels to be improved between pitch and video referees.

Reds bosses are still reeling from two crucial decisions by video refs against Hull that contributed to another narrow defeat.

Simms said:"We need to have rules put in black and white to guarantee greater consistency from the video referees. I'm very disappointed with what I have seen in recent weeks.

"I do feel that a lot of video referees are starting to interpret the rules in their own way, and we need consistency across the board.

"For this to happen, it's vital for there to be better levels of communication between the man who is out on the field in charge and the video referee, who is watching the game from a screen.

Crucial

"It's a two-way thing, they have to work accordingly and it seems to run fairly smoothly in Australia.

"I admit everyone makes mistakes, but people's careers and livelihoods can be put on the line and at risk by the outcome of these crucial calls.

"They are the difference between winning and losing, possibly between finishing in the top six and relegation, and Salford are not the only club suffering.

"I can remember one incident where a referee called a halt, but then went to the video referee and, for some unknown reason, he allowed the try. He overlooked the fact the referee had called a halt.

We saw the same thing in our game against Hull and there are far too many grey areas involving the video referee for my liking.

"A solution needs to be found pretty quickly and I don't think it's asking much for the referee and his assisting video referee to work better because they have such a key role."

I eagerly await the day someone associated with Salford Reds comes to the wicket and admits they had a dodgy call go their way. It happens, get over it.

I think everything Steve Simms has said is absolutly true. Some of the calls I have seen in recent months from the video referees have been beyond belief. I sometimes wonder if they are fit to do the job at all. Lets get it sorted out so we can enjoy the rugby rather than the controversy of these poor decisions
