Salford chase stadium dream

SALFORD are chasing the biggest and most significant victory since their formation as a rugby club in 1873.

Senior government officials will this week kick off an important hearing and investigation to determine whether or not Salford's dream move to a multi-million-pound new stadium home at Barton is to become reality.

Thanks to their chairman John Wilkinson's backing, Salford are in a healthy state and are worthy of being given this opportunity.

The Barton flagship project has been meticulously planned and the scheme opens up many new avenues not only for the club but for the city of Salford and its community.

The Barton blueprint must be backed to the hilt and Salford be allowed to maintain their reputation as one of Rugby League's bastion clubs.

The 20-day public inquiry opens at Swinton's Civic Centre tomorrow.

The city council gave planning permission for the é130m development in November. But deputy prime minister John Prescott, decided there should be an inquiry.

The council received 67 letters objecting to the plan and 82 in favour, as well as 273-name petition opposing the development and a 37-name one supporting it.

Many objectors are concerned about the need for more shops around the stadium as part of the development.

They believe they could undermine struggling stores in Eccles.

Other concerns are increase in traffic noise, loss of green space, devaluation of property, fears of rowdy fans, and light pollution from floodlights.

What do you think of the plans for a new stadium? Have your say.

What a load of old rubbish this article is there are two petitions with over 2000 signatures each supporting the stadium.

Your article is very flawed, a petition that over 2000 people signed has been delivered along with other smaller ones.
The MEN are usually more supportive of a local team who are desperately trying to improve both their playing standards and the surroundings that the game is played in for all fans.
As a resident in Eccles I can say that white goods outlets in Barton will not affect a town center that has know stores of the type that will hopefully be built in barton.
Salford getting a new state of the art stadium and provideing much needed jobs should get equal support from the MEN as the BBC move to the area did, but sadley it looks like you intend to dwell in any negatives.

I wish Salford all the best in their application. If they get it, then it will be good for Salford and good for Super League.

What a negative article that ignores the fact that there is more than one petition with over 2000 names supporting the stadium.

All this from the MEN that ran a campaign trying to improve the image of the the city of Salford last year.

Not a brick shall be built.

Why the change of tack form the MEN? I thought you were in support of the stadium plan.
No mention of the online petition, or the letter writing campaign. Waht's this rubbish about proposed shops affecting Eccles town centre? Perhaps your correpondent's mum has a "struggling" shop in Eccles? Maybe building a huge Morrisons and the West One in Eccles was what did the damage to the existing shops. Oh, and just in case anybody's missed that little thing across the ship canal, whats it called again? Oh yes! The Trafford Centre.

Play fair MEN

Why bother? Rugby League is a dying sport with ever diminishing crowds, propped up only by Sky TV money. The money could be much better spent

The sooner that they stop telling us about the details of minor celebrities and give us some real news the sooner they will get our respect.
