MATTY Smith, who turned to rugby league despite being a promising footballer with Everton, has been rewarded with a two-year, full-time contract with St Helens.

Half-back Smith, who has completed a bricklayers' apprenticeship, represented England Under-18s in their recent Test against France.

Saints have also signed two other youngsters from their junior set-up. Winger Dean McGilvray has been given a two-year deal and prop Danny Cooper has signed a 12-month contract.

Saints' development manager Mike Rush said: "We are delighted to have secured the signatures of these local youngsters.

"Each player has worked very hard and if they continue with their efforts they have very bright futures ahead of them."
