Salford Reds may have to look beyond Aussie Kurt Wrigley in their search for a new coach.
Reports from Australia claim Wrigley, the assistant coach of South Sidney, is not in any hurry to come to England and take charge of the Reds.
Wrigley is said to be keeping his options open having spoken with contacts both here and in Australia.
Meanwhile, Reds chairman John Wilkinson left Leeds on Sunday night following a comfortable 68-2 Challenge Cup win over Hunslet and talked about possibly going to Australia himself to find the club’s new coach.
According to Wilkinson, there are some very good names in the frame for the job, but he feels a visit Down Under could be needed such is the importance of the appointment.
Speaking after the 12-try Cup win, Wilkinson said: “We are looking for the best appointment and this outcome is key.
“We’re not in a position yet to push any buttons but it could finish with me having to go to Australia. We have a lot of things to consider.”
Leigh coach Ian Milward is still said to be in the running for the job and could come more to the fore pending developments down under.
Reds bosses will again spend this week analysing the possibilities open to them for the coaching job. Jim Dimmock and Andrew Dunemann have also been strongly linked, but the ‘safe money’ still appears to be on Milward.
He has got an excellent contract at Leigh but the chance of a return to the big time may prove too much of a temptation.
Reds cruised to victory at South Leeds Stadium yesterday where Luke Patten further aggravated a shoulder injury he picked up against Harlequins. He should be okay for Friday’s return to Super League at home to Hull, however.
Luke Adamson shone against the Hawks with a two-try display. Adamson said: “Hunslet really tried to get at us but we were pleased to come through.”
Stefan Ratchford, who went to fullback for the injured Patten, was also among the scorers.
Travelling fans who made their presence felt with great support for the Reds also called on Ratchford to sign the new contract on offer from the club.
Big Feka Paleaaesina chipped in with a couple as Salford led 22-2 at the break, and there were two more for young winger Adam Clay.
Salford’s reward for the victory was a fifth round home tie against fellow Super League outfit Hull KR.
Swinton have been handed a money-spinning trip to Warrington while fellow minnows Widnes will be at home to Hull.
Meanwhile, Rochdale boss John Stankevitch expressed his pride as Hornets produced a plucky performance at home to Castleford in the Challenge Cup.
Beaten 72-10 by Super League opponents, Stankevitch insisted the scoreline was not a fair reflection of the contest.
“I’m very proud. I can’t look at it any other way,” he said.
Swinton produced something of a shock at Dewsbury, who play a division above them in the Co-operative Championship, winning 44-38.
Widnes enjoyed a 62-18 win at London Skolars, Warrington eased to an 80-0 victory at Keighley while Wigan beat Batley 52-0 win at home.
On Saturday, Oldham Roughyeds were thumped 82-0 at Hull and St Helens won 52-26 at Sheffield.

Just to correct my previous post- it was Dave Tarry Salford chief executive who said "we anticipate a big calibre appointment' not Steve Simms. The point remains the same though, the danger of hype versus reality.
I certainly think we have missed the boat by not going after Brian Noble. It would have been a lot less expensive than going overseas .By the time the club had paid tranfer and settling in fees and then not really knowing how the coach was going to perform it would have been better with Noble who we know is capable of improving the team.Just hope we dont live to regret it.
Does the new coach have to be Australian?
Adrian Lam.............PLEASE!!!
why do we want an assistant coach we need a coach not a coahces second. brian noble is a good coach and will cost far less than some unproven aussie
Noddy would struggle coaching your lot at the minute........clearly the problem will still be there whoever the new coach will be due to the behind the scenes set up.
South "Sidney" is spelt Sydney.
everyone who comes as a coach tells us they have new ideas. we need someone to make them work.dont you think; an experienced coach.not an assistant we dont have the money wigan do we cant afford a mistake or someone who neads seasons to settle in or we will be in div 1
