New Salford Reds boss could be wizard of Oz

Phil Veivers
Salford City Reds’ search for a new head coach to replace Shaun McRae has triggered huge interest in Australia.

Many high-profile figures in the NRL have either applied for the job or sounded out contacts in England for the lowdown on Salford’s standing.

In the meantime, Reds bosses are said to be impressed with the caretaker job being done by assistant coach Phil Veivers, himself an Aussie.

Veivers is a contender for the job as Reds are prepare a shortlist of contenders.

Club chairman John Wilkinson, who terminated McRae’s contract last week, told MEN Sport: “The appointment has got to be right - we want the best person for the job.”

Reds do not have an individual target, but it is thought the appointment of an Australian is likely.

Football director Steve Simms has already confirmed Kurt Wrigley, the assistant coach of the south Sydney Rabbitohs will be considered.

Wrigley is a close friend of Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown and is regarded as one of the best up-and-coming coaches within the NRL.

Jim Dymock, the assistant coach of the Canterbury Bulldogs, where Reds stars Luke Patten and Daniel Holdsworth previously plied their trade, could also come into the reckoning as Reds gear up for next season at Barton.

Former Reds player Andrew Dunemann, making his mark at Newcastle, could also come into the reckoning and would be popular with the fans.

Former Leeds boss Graham Murray is among the NRL personalities to have sounded out contacts within the UK seeking their view on the Salford club.

Murray has not yet applied, nor has ex-Saints boss Daniel Anderson but Rick Stone, the experienced assistant boss at Newcastle, has said he may fancy a move to Super League.

Stone has had a 12-year apprenticeship, and with Wayne Bennett taking charge of the Knights, Stone may look elsewhere.

Several other Super League jobs could be up for grabs at the end of the season.

Michael Maguire is leaving Wigan and Terry Matterson, the Castleford boss, has been linked with a return to Australia, as has Huddersfield’s Brown.

McRae, meanwhile, is expected to pursue a career in the media.

Who should get the job? Have your say.

Don't discount Veivers ,he has done a creditable job, up to now, with inner turmoil at the club and the lack of an assistant. Surely that counts for something Someone new from Oz would have to take time to become acclimatized and that could take another year. It is my belief that a coach should choose his own assistants and the new coach should have that privilege. Let's see how Veivers performs in the next few matches. Torred
