He was hoping to bring the curtain down on his eight-year stint at The Willows against Wakefield on Sunday week but a wrist injury has brought a premature end to his season and possibly his rugby league career.
Now he is about to take up an offer from Preston Grasshoppers as full-time strength and conditioning coach.
He said: “I did the original injury about two years ago but managed to get by with injections now and again.
“But I collided with Phil Leuluai at training on Tuesday and aggravated it. I had x-rays and was told it’s time to have an operation which is scheduled for the end of the month.”
Wiganer Fitzpatrick has been one of the bright sparks in a disappointing season for Salford and has scored eight tries.
“I’m disappointed I won’t be able to say goodbye in that final game against Wakefield but I have to look at the bigger picture and it’s time to move on.”

PLAYER'S COME and PLAYER'S GO
It many way it will be sad to see Karl Fitzpatrick leave the Willows.
In his time at the club he's been a decent player and I would like to wish him well at his new club the Preston Grasshoppers.
ALL THE BEST 'FITZ'
A shame but not entirely unpredictable given the General's impending arrival. Hasn't been the same since snapping his Achilles so this seems to be fair for everyone.
An excellent servant to the club and always gave his all in the face of much adversity. Certainly he's been one of the few bright sparks of this season.
Best wishes for the future Fitzy!
