Salford win race to sign winger Jodie

SALFORD City Reds have fought off competition to sign Jodie Broughton, the highly-rated winger.

Broughton, 22 next month, has previously played for Hull and Leeds Rhinos.

He looked set for a move into rugby union but when this did not materialise Salford swooped and offered Broughton a two-year deal.

Reds football director Steve Simms is predicting a bright future at The Willows for Broughton.

Simms said: "We've been interested in Jodie for a while - he's a player who has always impressed me.

"He has good pace and is an exciting winger. I spoke with his agent Frank Endacott last week who informed us a move for Jodie into rugby union would not be happening.

"We then lost no time making him an offer and are very pleased to have completed the deal."

Broughton could make his Reds debut in the pre-season friendly at Leigh on December 27.

Meanwhile, Daniel Holdsworth, the club's latest Australian signing, will arrive in the UK in the New Year.

Skipper Mal Alker is expected to be fit for the start of the super league season after undergoing surgery.

A major concern for Salford at the moment is the condition of Rob Parker, who has contracted a virus.

Swinton have signed former Salford Academy player Rob Foxton.

Oldham have re-signed Paul O'Connor, Wayne Kerr and Jason Boults.

Former Widnes forward Michael Ostick has joined Rochdale.

Leigh prop Ricky Bibey could be sidelined until April after undergoing back surgery.

Richard Myler and Lee Briers are expected to be the first choice half backs at Warrington in 2010.

Wigan Warriors have handed the No 6 shirt to Sam Tomkins and Phil Bailey has agreed a new one-year deal.

Really pleased to see Jodie Broughton at the Willows.

I believe he will have the number 2 shirt and I see him as a good replacement for John Wilshere.

Now will this be last new name for the Reds in 2010 ?

I hope Jodie Broughton turns out to be a good signing, but like Daniel Holdsworth, I've never heard of him! Who are the competion we fought of to sign him? How many times have we heard Steve Simms describing new signings, usually Australians as having bright futures, Salford fighting off other clubs to the signature, or the player being widely regarded as the best uncapped player in the NRL, and then the likes of Jeremy Smith arrives, taking a wage? I appreciate that at Salford we have limited financial clout, but what little we have should be put into our youth, and the team built around the likes of Ratchford and Adamson for next year in Super League!

At last ,a winger! And with a name like Broughton, a good signing for Salford. We definitely needed a natural wing for the right side.Barring injuries it looks like a decent side for 2010 ,however there will be injuries and we will need stalwart young players to fill the gaps. People like Adamson and Ratchford ! Torred
