Ashcroft calls for Sale and Salford to groundshare

KEVIN Ashcroft believes Salford must seriously consider inviting rugby union neighbours Sale Sharks to join them in a ground share scheme at Barton.

The former Reds coach is convinced a joint venture between the two rugby codes would significantly raise the profile of the on-going Barton project.

The multi-million pound stadium scheme continues to drag on and Ashcroft told MEN Sport: "Surely it makes sense under the current climate for Salford to consider bringing the Sharks on board whenever Barton is ready. Such a scheme would guarantee all year round rugby.

"It would raise the profile of the new stadium and it would help both clubs in the long term.

"Personally speaking, if Salford went to Barton simply as a Super League club I don't think this would be very viable. More is needed.

Gulf

"The gulf between the two codes is not too great. Sharing the same stadium would prove to be extremely beneficial to both clubs.

"Salford's current home was classed as an old stadium as long ago as 1990 when I was coaching there. There's always been a lot of talk about moving and it has to happen. The vision of Salford chairman John Wilkinson has always been incredible but this particular scheme has taken way too long.

"He deserves his stadium. But it should have been in place long before now.

"This is why I would look at bringing Sale into the plan.

"The big sponsorships that are available in union mean there is money for fun."

Ashcroft will be speaking to the Salford fans at next week's meeting of the Forever Reds group.

He added: "I want this stadium built, but talk has gone on for some time now and things need to move on."

What do you think? Have your say.

its the obvious solution for both clubs - its common sense, so probably wont happen

I would think that the owners of Sale Sharks have been manipulating their way around to this solution since they moved from Heywood Road,in Sale.

It could be the death knell for Stockport County if they do leave though.

I suggest you ask Stockport County fans for their views on ground sharing with Sale sharks.

If having sale as a partner is the only way to get this thing off the ground, then so be it. Salford really need a new ground to maintain SL standards and sale appear eager to vacate Edgely park . The Reds should be the senior partner in this venture as we don't want the RU to dictate what happens at Barton Torred

it would also help Stockport County in the long term. It may even attract a buyer for SCFC as we seem to be destined to remain in administration. It is deeply shameful that one of the countries largest towns cannot provide for its own football club. I dont wish for european glory just a club with its own identity and a team with a bit of security and pride!

remember last time the ground share was mutted, Sale turned up at the Willows unannounced and acted like they owned the place and the whole deal fell through.
