SALFORD Reds plan to avoid being slam-dunked by a man dubbed the Michael Jordan of Rugby League.
Reds face Kiwi man mountain Ali Lauitiiti tonight, who makes his debut for Leeds Rhinos and has been likened to the mercurial Jordan by his former New Zealand Warriors' coach Mark Graham.
Salford's own New Zealand star Cliff Beverley played alongside Lauitiiti at the Warriors and has a very high regard for the New Zealand powerhouse.
Cliff said: "I was there when Mark Graham told Ali he was Rugby League's version of Michael Jordan. For such a huge powerful man he has wonderful, sublime handling skills.
"From 10 yards out he can be unstoppable. It's fair to also liken him to Inga the Winger - a powerful player with good feet, good step and incredible handling skills.
"I just wish Ali was playing on my team - he's quality and one top bloke.
"When you have been acknowledged as the best second row forward in the world you never lose what you have got.
"On his day he can be sensational and has a wonderful array of skills.
Boost
"I guess it's a real boost for Super League to see world class players like Lauitiiti playing in the competition.
"The standard of football over here is getting better and better. It will be good to meet up with him again tonight."
Lauitiiti is expected to start on the bench after flying in from New Zealand.
Reds checked out his availability before he signed for Leeds but it was obvious the big man was destined for one of the big clubs and Leeds swooped.
Reds delayed selection tonight but Mal Alker is passed fit despite picking up a blow to the ribs in the win against Castleford.
Reds have lost all their previous 14 Super League clashes with the Rhinos.
They are even given a 40-point start on some RL coupons, but coach Karl Harrison fully expects his charges to make a fist of what could be an intriguing clash.
Harrison will be hoping Reds can reproduce the kind of form they showed earlier in the season when pushing Bradford Bulls to the limit.
