McRae Q & A

Shaun McRae
SALFORD coach Shaun McRae has hit back at the stinging criticism following the 64-20 battering by rivals Warrington at the weekend.

Pressure is mounting on the beleaguered boss but McRae says he is committed to the Reds challenge.

Here, he answers NEIL BARKER'S questions on his future and that of the Super League outfit.

Are you totally committed to Salford RL?

Absolutely. I never shirk responsibility. My passion to coach and work to the best of my ability will never diminish. Salford has been my life for the past two years and I hope that remains the same for the next two-and-a-half. My commitment is total. We are in a fight right now and we are working to improve the club and I'd like to recruit more quality.

Do you feel you have the full backing of everyone at the club?

As far as I know I do. That includes the board, the staff and the players. If I didn't I would hope any persons would tell me to my face and not be spineless and cowardly because backstabbing rips any club to pieces.

What are your long-term aims for Salford?

This year it was coming to terms with Super League. I never once made any promises about Challenge Cups and play-offs. I did say a play-off position would be a dream but that is now over. We have had to adapt and learn from the experiences. Some have been pleasant, others haven't but we need to continue building as a team and to do what Castleford have done.

What is happening with Richard Myler?

No one at the club in an official capacity has yet told me anything differently other than to say Richard is on contract with us for next season. I cannot turn on players because they may be leaving. I always have to play my strongest team. I don't think his agent has, however, helped in all this and he may have created a bit of confusion in the kid's mind.

What can you say about Stefan Ratchford?

He is a very gifted and talented athlete. He's one of the only players who can play in every position in the back line. With players injured and unavailable he has been needed to fill in certain roles. I see Stefan as a specialist pivot and utility player. I've explained the situation to him. I know he has a preference to play 6 or 7 and in an ideal world we would but it's not easy with players missing.

Can you bounce back from the nightmare second-half performance at Warrington?

I felt genuinely sorry for everybody. We all feel the hurt but we have to respond.

The Warrington effort was a total disgrace, but the Reds have beaten Leeds, Saints and Huddersfield this season so there is still hope, altho not much. They will have the opportunity to turn everything around by beating Wakefield this coming weekend . If they don't, then drastic measures are called for.Torred

Steady away Reds - this is the first of 3 efforts we get at SL lets not panic - we won't finish bottom and as Torred said look at the positives - to gain more support we need less points against us and win more - but how can we expect more support if we attack people at the club now? - by the time we get to the end of the 2011 season even Bratford may be in with a shout - 2009 beat Rhino's at Headingley yes we did! Things went our way on the day and that's what it boils down to - we just need more of them.
