Mort force the ball down in the dying seconds, before kicking the conversion.
The Vikings will be wondering where it all went wrong after they led 8-0 with only 20 minutes to play but were let down by poor discipline.
Loz Wildbore went over after nine minutes for Widnes and Gavin Dodd landed a conversion to make it 6-0 at the break.
Dodd inched Widnes towards the finish line but Stuart Donlan replied on 62 minutes before Mort's winner.
LIAM McGovern gave another superb display for his new club Rochdale with a try and three conversions but it counted for nothing as Oldham edged it 26-18.
But it took a brilliant try from James Coyle in the 73rd minute to eclipse mighty Mac's efforts.
Rochdale led going into half-ime as Wayne Corcoran and Dave Cunliffe put the Hornets in pole position but those tries were cancelled out by Chris Baines and Lee Greenwood.
A McGovern effort one minute into the new half gave Hornets the edge but two tries in two minutes from Steve Gibbons and Andy Ballard turned the match on its head.
AN Andy Saywell try right on the hooter pinched the points for Paul Kidd's Swinton team against Blackpool in a fiercely competitive game on the coast that finished 16-12.
Blackpool were heading for victory, leading by two points with seconds remaining, before Swinton pulled it out the bag through the former Widnes and Rochdale winger.
The fleet-footed back just had enough guile to barge over, which was all what was required.
Graham Holroyd's conversion made certain of Swinton taking the points.
Neil Rigby's 76th minute try was also crucial for Swinton as it gave them a flicker of hope before Saywell struck.
Gary Hulse was the other Lions' scorer when he touched down after 11 minutes.

Blackpool 12 Swinton 16
Can I draw your attention to the following inaccurate parts of the report on the Lions' last gasp victory against Blackpool on the Fylde on Good Friday?
"The fleet-footed back (Saywell) just had enough guile to barge over, which was all what was required."
"Graham Holroyd's conversion made certain of Swinton taking the points."
It is plainly obvious to anyone with the tiniest grain of intelligence that this "report" was written by someone who did NOT attend the match - for the following two reasons.
1. Andy Saywell did NOT "barge over” for his winning try in the corner. The try was the result of a lofted kick by Graham Holroyd and a chase. As Saywell and the home defenders made for the ball, the Blackpool player stumbled and Saywell touched down on the lose ball. Definitely no "barging over" here.
2. Holroyd's conversion of Saywell's try did NOT clinch victory as any primary school child could tell you. With the try by Saywell the scoreline became Blackpool 12 Swinton 14. Holroyd's excellent kick from near the touchline made it a hard earned win for the Lions by a 4 point margin.
