RUGBY League legend Alex Murphy is calling for game plans to be booted into touch.

Murphy claims lessons must be learned from England's World Cup nightmare and believes a shake-up in coaching techniques is needed.

"We must start by scrapping game plans and go back to playing a natural game," he said.

"The best players are the ones who have always played it as they see it, These players are not programmed like robots.

"I'm absolutely sick and tired of six forwards plodding up and down the middle. We are killing the game, it's boring and it's time to change.

"When did we last have centres with the ability to draw men and create scoring chances for their wingers? They're a thing of the past.

"When you watch Darren Lockyer, the Australian player you can see he plays it as he sees it, he's thinking on his feet all the time."

Murphy says the World Cup shambles should be a turning point for old ideas to be brought back.

"I was extremely embarrassed with what I saw from England out in Australia," he admitted.

"It was embarrassing - they were the worst England team who've ever come together and the 10,000 people who went out there to cheer them on were very badly let down.

"I went out with big expectations but after the game against Papua New Guinea you could see it wasn't going to happen, we were lucky to win that game.

"There needs to be an inquiry at Rugby League level because people who were on the trip kept hearing reports that the team spirit was poor and we all saw the performances, they just weren't good enough.

"Years ago I warned people about the way our game was being flooded by second rate overseas players. People took no notice but what I've said has come true and this has not helped our game.

"What we saw in the World Cup has proved that we lack genuine quality player and we need to somehow try and remedy the situation."
