Rugby League

Cashmere at the ready

Ray Cashmere
RAY Cashmere is happy to roll up his sleeves and be one of rugby league's unsung heroes.

The big Aussie front-rower has joined Salford City Reds on the recommendation of former Saints and Wigan boss Ian Millward, who rates him highly.

Cashmere, a 6ft 5in prop played under Millward at the North Queensland Cowboys and won respect for his toughness, durability and honest graft.

Cashmere arrived in Salford at his earliest opportunity so he could settle in with his wife Sarah and baby son Charlie but is already looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead.

"It's always been an ambition of mine to play for an England club and I felt the time was right," he said.

"I must admit I didn't know too much about Salford but I was familiar with the coach Shaun McRae and I'm excited at the prospect of playing for the club on their return to Super League. Salford are very ambitious.

"I chatted at length about the move with Ian Millward and he told me all about Salford and said `go for it', so I did."

Success

Millward believes he will be a big success in the Super League.

"There are no frills or spills with Ray, he's a fine player," he said.

"He's had another very good season with the Cowboys. His defence is strong and he has all the attributes to go very well in Super League. Teams could find him a handful."

Cashmere will be joined at Salford by his Cowboys' team-mate Mark Henry, who he rates highly.

"I'm sure Mark will really have a big impact on Super League," he said.

"He really is a quality player, he's been outstanding this season for the Cowboys.

"It will obviously be good to have him over here playing for the same team and we're both relishing the new challenge we face.

"I've settled in quickly to our new lifestyle, I've been training and can't wait for things to start."

Cashmere is no stranger to European rugby league, having played for French club Lezignan four years ago.

"I enjoyed being part of a different culture in France and this possibly whetted my appetite to come and play in England," he added.

"I'm here already because I did not want to miss a big chunk of pre-season training with my new club. I am really keen to do my bit for Salford, it should be a very good experience."
