As the greatest-ever player in Saints' history, Murphy's loyalties naturally lie in their camp but he is hoping, above all, that two such star-studded sides serve up a classic.
"I just hope we can witness one of the great finals on such a wonderful stage as Old Trafford," he said.
"There's no reason why we shouldn't when you stop to consider the quality on view and this is a perfect opportunity for rugby league to really show what our great game is all about."
Murphy admits to being a huge fan of coach Daniel Anderson, who will be taking charge of Saints for the last time tomorrow night.
Murphy added: "I would personally like to thank Daniel Anderson for what he has done for the club since taking charge.
"His record is phenomenal and I like the way he goes about his business.
"He doesn't come on the TV telling the world the key to his team's success. He simply gets on with the job in hand and goes about things in a very unassuming way.
"He can certainly bring out the best in Saints, but success for them tends to be expected. Yet here is a coach who lets his players express themselves on the field.
"His teams have played an excellent brand of rugby, St Helens have certainly entertained and it would be good to see him go out on a high with a win."
Murphy has also been impressed by the performances of two of his old club's players this season, James Graham, the newly-crowned Man of Steel, and Leon Pryce.
"Graham is a terrific prospect. What I like about this lad is his hunger and ambition," he said.
"He's not content just to be Man of Steel and the writers' player of the year, he now wants to be a Grand Final winner and good luck to the lad.
"Pryce will hopefully realise before too long just how enormously talented and gifted he is.
"This lad has everything and he's had a superb season. I just hope he can deliver in the Grand F inal and then head for the World Cup and put on another top show there.
"I'm sure the Saints will want to do it for Daniel Anderson. And what a send-off it would be if they were to triumph."

By all accounts, Saints should win .They play an exciting brand of rugby and seem to be jewelled in every hole. No reflection on Leeds ,as they too have a strong team ,but at the end of the day, i believe that Saints will prove they are the better squad. Torred
