Oldham look for final fling

OLDHAM and arch-rivals Rochdale Hornets are on course for a National League Two Grand Final showdown.

Steve Deakin's Oldham can clinch a final spot on Sunday with a home win over Doncaster while in-form Hornets can also move a step nearer the final if they win at Keighley following their victory at York last week.

Swinton coach Paul Kidd, whose side have faced both clubs this season, is tipping the pair to progress after peaking at the right time.

He said: "Oldham have gone well all year. They have experience, they were in last year's Grand Final and will want to return. On their day, they are capable of playing some quality football.

"I rate Steve Deakin the coach, he's extremely methodical and is a great thinker."

"I'm sure Mick Nanyn will be wanting to finish the season off on a high with Oldham before he goes to Super League. He's been a very prolific point scorer at this level and he has a wealth of Grand Final experience.

"They also have another experienced player in Rob Roberts who has led from the front and really turned in some good performances while Thomas Coyle provides natural flair at half-back.

Rochdale cannot be ruled out, even though they face a tough game at Keighley but their results speak for themselves.

Example

"I didn't think they were in a play-off position when Darren Shaw succeeded Bobbie Goulding but Darren has done really well. Rochdale also have a very good player who leads by example and that's Ian Sinfield.

"I've coached Ian, I know what he's all about and he too is a natural leader. He has bags of experience, he's played in three Grand Finals and is the ideal man for this kind of situation.

"Hornets have greatly impressed me. They have tremendous pace in the backs and if they can win the arm wrestle in the opening quarter they have the ability to cut loose and tear teams to shreds.

"Darren has a lot of good players in his side but Carl Sneyd has possibly been the unsung hero. He's a terrifically talented player. The clash with Keighley is a tough one to call but Hornets are going into it with confidence.

"Darren has really turned things around and they will fancy their chances after some tremendous results in recent weeks.

"They're a difficult team to play against, like I say they've got loads of pace and they play a good brand of rugby."

Warrington Wolves have major injuries ahead of tonight's Super League play-off clash with Catalans Dragons in France.

Lee Briers is ruled out and skipper Adrian Morley faces a late fitness test on a stomach muscle injury sustained against Huddersfield last week.

The Wolves are also without Paul Rauhihi and Rob Parker.

A top target for next season is Hull forward Gareth Carvell while Iestyn Harris is still interested in the assistant coach's role alongside Jimmy Lowes.
