Rugby League

Adrian Morley column

ARE we going to see Paul Sculthorpe pulling on a Celtic Crusaders shirt next season?

It will certainly be interesting to see where Scully ends up with him moving on from Saints.

The door is seemingly closed on Scully at Salford and he had already been linked with a move to South Wales.

The Crusaders certainly need a high-profile signing to outline their intentions and ambitions in Super League next year.

Landing Scully would be quite a coup.

It's surprising how circumstances and situations can change so quickly in rugby league.

Two or three years ago, it would have been very hard to imagine a world-class player of Scully's standing would be on the move from Saints.

Back then, every club in the land would have wanted him in their ranks but he has not had the best of luck with injury in recent years and has been badly missed.

He will certainly give the Crusaders a big boost but I would not be at all surprised to see him signing for Wakefield and teaming up with his brother Danny.

Wakefield have already said they would be keen to take him on board.

Wherever he goes, a fully-fit Scully will provide a boost.

Turning to my own club Warrington, we are still smarting badly from last weekend's surprise home defeat by Hull KR.

It was a sickening loss, it was a game we could and should have won but it could prove to be just the kick up the pants we need with the play-offs approaching.

Everyone has been playing with confidence going into the Rovers game but we threw it away and conceded tries from kicks.

We ended up being stung but we must now bounce back and beat Castleford and Huddersfield to secure fourth spot.

We fancy our chances in the play-offs because they're a whole new ball game.

It's do or die in these games and it's what we've been working towards.

I see referee Steve Ganson is the man who will take charge of the Challenge Cup Final between Saints and Hull.

Steve comes from St Helens but I don't have a problem with this and feel any coaches who bleat about appointments involving a referee taking charge of their hometown team are clutching at very thin straws.

The referees are professional and their honest integrity allows them to simply get on with the job in hand.

Don't forget, the top Sydney clubs are refereed by Sydney-based officials.

Referees come under a lot of scrutiny, I've no qualms with how things have gone this season, the men in the middle have done well. They do a good job but they were a bit too whistle-happy for my liking at the start of the campaign but things settle down.

Finally, it would be remiss of me not to salute the on-field heroics of my elder brother Chris who is hanging up his boots at the end of the season.

Chris has had a great career and has always been a source of inspiration for me. It's a pity he's finally had to succumb to a knee injury. He'll be missed.

I suppose seeing as though Swinton are linked to St Helens we could always get Sculthorpe in to replace Chris as long as he can prove his fitness and doesnt mind fighting for a place

A.M. is right -it's an insult to today's referees' professionalism and integrity to think that they will be biased towards their respective hometown teams. And if they were , they are graded on performance and therefore woudn't last very long!Torred
