Rugby League

Weekend round up

LEIGH cemented their play-off place in National League One with an excellent 33-24 victory over Widnes Vikings at Hilton Park.

Either side could have nicked bictory at the death but it was Neil Kelly’s Centurions who took their chances at crucial points in the game.

Dave Alstead and Ian Watson grabbed vital touch downs after the Vikings had led 24-20 to give Kelly victory over his old club.

CARL Syned started where he left off last week, plundering two tries and four goals in Rochdale's 38-6 win over Blackpool Panthers.

Syned landed 26 points seven days ago and a further 16 points yesterday.

Chris Giles got Rochdale ticking over early on and a Dave Cunliffe brace put them firmly in control. Syned and Leroy Rivett crossed before half-time.

In the closing minutes Syned, Martin Ainscough and Paul Rolls scored.

SWINTON clipped the wings of Hunslet Hawks with a 36-20 win at Sedgeley Park to give their supporters something to shout about.

Returning skipper Liam McGovern notched 12 points for the Lions but all the good work was done early doors as Marlon Billy, Wayne English and Martin Moana all crossed for well-worked tries.

Richard Chapman and Stuart Young kept the visitors in touch but the Lions kicked on through tries from McGovern and Dean Gorton added second-half tries.

The Hawks replied through a Scott Aiken double to keep their hopes alive but Darren Bamford settled it late on.

YORK Knights continued their rich vein of form with an emphatic 40-24 win over Steve Deakin’s Oldham.

The Knights have been going well of late and that continued as they put sorry Oldham to the sword.

All the damage was done during a relentless first-half as the Knights ran in five tries to Oldham’s one. Mick Nanyn got Oldham’s only effort of the first-half and they simply had too much to do in the second period.

Tries by Phil Joseph, Ian Hodson and James Coyle kept Oldham hopes alive.
