Super League-bound Reds showed enough steely determination to deny Halifax a bonus point and with three games left they have the bit between their teeth.
They scored four first-half tries with Stuart Littler grabbing the opener, the impressive John Turner the second and John Wilshire diving over for the third.
Matt Gardner kept up the pressure and although Miles Greenwood and Damien Gibson touched down to keep Halifax in the hunt Salford were never in serious danger.
Wilshire kicked and edged them further ahead after the break and Stefan Ratchford celebrated signing a new contract by grabbing the final try.
Wilshire said: "This was a big game for us and we knew we had to put daylight between ourselves and Halifax.
"We also knew it was important to stop Halifax picking up a bonus point, we simply had to hang in there."
Robbie Paul, returning from injury, added: "We know have a seven point cushion and there is a lot of competition for places within the side. We have our nose in front and we just have to keep on pressing because there is a lot to play for."
Halifax added two more tries after the break and offered spirited resistance, but the Reds did enough early on to influence the outcome.
Meanwhile, reports from Australia claim Salford boss Shaun McRae is keen to sign Sione Faumuina from the North Queensland Cowboys.
The big New Zealander can either play in the pack or half pack and Reds have already swooped for his team-mate Ray Cashmere.
They also have also been elated about the possible availability of NRL "bad boy" Todd Carney despite reports of a number of off-field scrapes.
He is likely to leave Canberra and may look to Super League, but it would be a huge gamble.
Reports from Humberside also claim Paul Cooke will be a target for the Reds if he is released from Hull KR.
McRae coached Cooke at Hull.

A JOB WELL DONE at the Shay last night.
Not only did we get the 3 points but we also stopped Halifax RLFC getting the bonus point.
It was a scrappy game at times but at this stage of the season A WINS A WIN.
Next up Dewsbury Rams on Fri 8/8/08..
Who is this JOHN Turner and when did we sign him, plus Halifax got 18 not 16.
Sione Faumuine sounds like an excellent fit for the reds ,considering his versatility. Another good win especially denying 'Fax the bonus point. We're on a roll! Torred
