Reds line up Higham

Micky Higham
WIGAN Warriors hooker Micky Higham will be playing for Salford next season providing the City Reds land a Super League franchise licence.

Higham is understood to have agreed a two-year deal with Salford after being told he will be released by Wigan at the end of this season.

Higham is excited by the club's ambitious plans and he would be a good asset as one of the quickest hookers in the top flight.

Higham is leaving Wigan following the signing of Parramatta hooker Mark Riddell.

Meanwhile, coach Shaun McRae is delighted with the block-busting form of Kiwi prop Phil Leuluai.

The former Cronulla Sharks forward has been reproducing the form he showed in the NRL.

McRae said: "Phil is a powerful man. He drags people with him and has an off-load game.

"He is one of those players who can take energy out of the opposition.

"I am not at all surprised to see him proving such a popular figure with the fans because he is a character and a great guy on and off the field.

"He can be very tough to play against due to his strength and his very direct style of play."

Leuluai was outstanding in Friday's win over Sheffield and young Adam Sidlow again went well.

McRae said: "I thought a number of players showed up really well. I was looking for a positive response following the defeat at Whitehaven and got it.

"We have some very young players in the squad and it's unrealistic to think we are going to blow the opposition apart every time we take the field.

"This just doesn't happen. You have to earn the right to get into a winning position.

"This is a much tougher competition than people thought.

"The standard of National League rugby is very good. The last time Salford were at this level, it was something of a cakewalk but this is no longer the case.

"There are some very good teams at this level and some excellent players. You just don't walk on to a field expecting to win."

Reds now turn their attentions to this week's Northern Rail Cup semi- final clash with the Celtic Crusaders at Brewery Field.

What do you think of the move for Higham? Have your say.

If and when Salford return to the Super League , they are going to need an infusion of about 6 proven Super League players. This is a positive start. We live in hope that this year in the NL will be a good training experience for the younger players, like Sidlow and Myler. Torred, Toronto

I am absolutly delighted with this capture.

My only regret is that Higham can't join us straight away.

Never mind he's worth waiting for.

The main thing is we get that Super League franchise licence.

FINGERS ALL CROSSED....

This is a shrewd bitof buisness for the reds for When not If we get the franchise nod, We have had tremendous service from our fantastic captain Malcolm Alker but when we return to the superleague fold we need that extra dimension at hooker and i believe Higham can give us that, a lot of the average players need cutting adrift on our return..Namely Brocklehurst, Highton,Garder,Littler..as much as it pains me to say stuart isnt super league quality anymore. Its going to be the herald of a new era for the cityreds especially with The city of salford stadium on schedule for 2010.
