Darren off to flyer

DARREN Shaw has landed the job of trying to put the sting back into Rochdale Hornets.

Shaw, who started the season as Leigh Centurions coach, now finds himself calling the shots at Spotland.

Hornets officials are pinning their faith in Shaw following the sacking of Bobbie Goulding last week.

Hornets, under Shaw's guidance, got off to a flying start on Sunday with a much needed 44-10 over York. Shaw hopes it's a sign of things to come. He certainly knows the territory having assisted Goulding during the former coach's first spell in charge.

Shaw says: "Rochdale is a club I know well from my two years there, one as a player and assistant coach and one as just the assistant. It's a challenge I'm looking forward to.

"Everything happened so quickly over the weekend but I've been happy with what I've seen so far. I already know a few of the players and I'm keen to do well.

"There is potential to strengthen which I am happy about, but I would also like to get some confidence back into the players who are already at the club."

Shaw is regarded as an innovative, hard-working coach. He replaces Goulding who was sacked after the 52-8 home defeat by Gateshead.

That was Rochdale's seventh successive loss but Shaw bucked the trend on Sunday.

Club captain Jimmy Elston, who was a big supporter of ex-boss Goulding, has left the club and will join Dewsbury Rams.

Shaw, whose playing career included a spell with Salford, adds: "This is a good opportunity and I'll give it my best shot."

LUKE Menzies, who has been on loan at Oldham, has returned to Hull KR.

Oldham wanted to extend his stay but Menzies has been ordered back by the Robins.

LEIGH coach Neil Kelly was pleased with his team's win over Dewsbury but is still worried over the fitness of Adam Rudd and Toa Kohe-Love.

ADAM Mogg has signed a new contract with Les Catalanas, ending speculation he could end up at either Wigan or Saints next season.

WIDNES Vikings have taken French prop Adel Fellous on loan from Hull and have signed Wigan schoolboy Tom Kelly.

SWINTON Lions are keen to take Barrow forward Paul Rafferty on loan.
