Warrington fielded a near full-strength side for their final pre-season game before they kick off the new campaign against Hull in 12 days' time.
Lee Briers was not risked after suffering a back spasm during training and Stuart Reardon and Paul Wood have still not been given medical clearance after shoulder operations.
Paul Cullen's side trailed 18-6 after 55 minutes but three tries in a nine-minute spell from Andy Bracek, Jon Clarke and Paul Rauhihi, and two conversions from Chris Bridge, spared their blushes.
The Wolves got off to a flying start when Ben Westwood sent Martin Gleeson over for the opening try after just four minutes which Bridge converted.
Salford finished the half strongly and were rewarded with a try from Stuart Littler which John Wilshere converted to level at 6-6 at half-time.
Salford took the lead on 54 minutes when Warrington full-back Bridge failed to deal with Wilshere's towering bomb and Adam Sidlow collected the loose ball to touch down and Wilshere converted.
It got even better for the Reds when Phillip Leuluai crashed over from close range four minutes later and Wilshere's third conversion made it 18-6 with 25 minutes remaining.
That sparked the Wolves into life and that late burst.

OK we all wanted a win but to get so close Warrington is a great effort. Looking good for the new season
I believe the reds can take satisfaction after holding a Super League squad to a close margin. The future looks bright! Torred,Toronto
Very good workout for the Reds yesterday against a very strong and mobile Warrington Wolves Super League outfit.
I was very impressed by young Myler and Turner looks like he is going to be outstanding this season at loose forward...
COME ON THE REDS...
